Ngarenaro Medical Center in Arusha, Tanzania
The medical center is located in Ngarenaro area Arusha town about 15 minutes by bus from the town center. Ngarenaro Health Centre originally started as a women’s health center. Currently, it is an exclusively women’s reproductive health center located in the city center and occupies 8 doctors, 40 nurses, a laboratory service, an outpatient department, a maternity and children clinic, and a labor ward.
Because of the high number of patients, the center is very busy and can hardly meet the demands for its services, which include comprehensive breastfeeding, antenatal care and pregnancy, prevention of mother to child transmission, care treatment and counseling for HIV positive mothers, delivery, early infant diagnosis, family planning, general maternity, counseling, and testing for HIV/AIDS. All these services are available 24 hours.
The clinic accepts volunteers who are medical students or medical professionals (CV needed before). The main tasks of the volunteers are assisting local nurses in the labor room, giving vaccinations to newborns, and treating mothers and their children who come to the center. Sometimes they might even be given administrative work.
The duties will be allocated on the basis of the volunteer/Interns qualification and previous experience
Shadow doctor duties
Checking up patients like BP check, body temperature, sugar, etc.
First aid and other nursing duties are given by the doctor
Maternal healthcare and female ward duties
Duties in the Labour room
Vaccinations to newborn babies
Pre maternal care and after delivery care of mother and baby
Non-experience volunteers will be placed for general duties like taking care of the patients, cleaning the premises, helping the staff in nursing, etc.
